Gauge
About 14 dc x 8 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 in). Resize by changing the starting chain in multiples of 6 + 2. If you crochet tightly, go up a hook size; if loosely, go down one.
Step 1: Base and lower body (Rounds 1-12)
- Foundation: ch 60 loosely. Without twisting, join with a sl st to form a ring.
- Round 1: Ch 1, work 60 sc evenly around. Join to the first sc. [60 sc]
- Round 2: Ch 2, dc in each stitch around. Join to the top of the ch-2. [60 dc]
- Rounds 3-8: Repeat Round 2 (six dc rounds in total), joining each round. [60 dc]
- Rounds 9-12: Ch 1, hdc in each stitch around for 4 rounds, joining each round. [60 hdc]
Step 2: Ridge and upper body (Rounds 13-33)
- Rounds 13-25: Repeat Round 2 for 13 rounds. The holder now measures about 35-40 cm. [60 dc]
- Round 26: Ch 1, sc around, join. [60 sc]
- Round 27: Sc in the back loop only of every stitch to create a raised decorative ridge. [60 sc]
- Rounds 28-32: Repeat Round 2 for 5 rounds. [60 dc]
- Round 33: Ch 1, sc around and join. [60 sc]
Step 3: Oval bag exit
- Start: ch 30 and join into a small ring.
- Round 1: 30 sc around, join. [30 sc]
- Round 2: 30 sc in the back loops only. [30 sc]
- Round 3: 30 sc around, then fasten off. Flatten the ring slightly into an oval. [30 sc]
- Attach: place the ring near the bottom front of the holder and stitch it securely all the way around, keeping the center clear.
- Open and reinforce: carefully open the body fabric behind the ring and stitch over the cut edges by hand so nothing can unravel.

Step 4: Ivory top rim
- Round 1: Join ivory at the upper edge. Work 60 sc evenly around. [60 sc]
- Round 2: Work 60 hdc around for a sturdy rim. [60 hdc]
- Round 3: Work 60 sc around for a clean edge. Fasten off and weave in the ends. [60 sc]
Step 5: Hanging strap
- Start: with ivory, ch 50.
- Row 1: Sc in the 2nd chain from the hook and each chain across. [49 sc]
- Rows 2-3: Ch 1, turn, sc across. [49 sc]
- Attach: fasten off with a long tail. Fold the strap into a long oval loop and sew both ends firmly to opposite sides of the upper rim.
Step 6: Colors for the trio
- Holder 1: dusty pink body with ivory finishing.
- Holder 2: sage green body with a narrow ivory decorative stripe.
- Holder 3: lavender body with cream and beige finishing.
Weave in all ends and test the strap for strength. Push folded grocery bags in through the top, pull one out through the bottom exit and hang on a sturdy peg. If bags catch, make the exit ring a little bigger.

Care
Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle, or by hand with a mild detergent. Press the water out gently, lay flat on a towel to dry and reshape while damp.
Make it yours
- Bobble or popcorn rounds for texture
- Shell or crab-stitch borders
- Pom-poms on the hanging loop
- Sunny yellow or teal as a fourth holder
Make it a quick Christmas gift
Crochet bag holders are some of the most useful quick crochet Christmas gifts: cheap to make from cotton you already own, finished in an evening or two, and actually used every day. They make a great crochet housewarming gift too, and sell well at Christmas craft markets. Tuck a few folded bags inside before you wrap it so it is ready to hang.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to cut the fabric for the bag exit?
The opening behind the oval ring is made by carefully separating the stitches, then whip-stitching over the edges twice. If you prefer not to cut, leave a gap of about 10 stitches (ch 10, skip 10) in one of the lower rounds and sew the ring over it.
Can I make just one holder?
Of course. Each holder is a complete pattern on its own; the trio is just three color versions.
How do you put plastic bags in a bag holder?
Fold or loosely roll each bag, push it in through the top opening and keep adding bags on top. Pull the first one out through the bottom opening: as you take one, the next drops down, so they come out one at a time.
