Crochet Mesh Bag Holder with Roses & Daisies – Free Pattern
A beginner-friendly crochet bag holder pattern in light, stretchy mesh, on a wooden ring, with rolled crochet roses in pink or little daisies in sage green.
This free crochet bag holder pattern is light, stretchy and quick: a tube of simple double crochet mesh that hangs from a wooden ring, with a narrower bottom so bags come out one at a time. Make it in dusty pink with three rolled crochet roses, or in sage green with clusters of crochet daisies. Both flower patterns are included and work as easy appliques for other projects too.

- Small amounts of blush, dusty pink, yellow and green for the flowers and leaves
- 4 mm crochet hook
- Wooden ring, about 5 cm (2 in)

Gauge
Work a 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 in) swatch with the 4 mm hook. To make the holder wider, add to the starting chain in multiples of 2. If your swatch is small, go up a hook size.
Step 1: Foundation and base (Rounds 1-2)
- Foundation: ch 64 loosely and join with a sl st into a ring without twisting.
- Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each chain around and join. [64 sc]
- Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in every stitch around and join. [64 dc]
Step 2: Open mesh body
- Round 3: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), skip 1 stitch. *Dc in the next stitch, ch 1, skip 1.* Repeat around and join. [32 mesh spaces]
- Round 4: Sl st into the first ch-1 space, ch 4. *Dc in the next ch-1 space, ch 1.* Repeat around and join.
- Length: keep repeating Round 4 until the mesh body measures about 28 cm (11 in).
Step 3: Top border and bottom narrowing
- Top border: with ivory, work 2 rounds of dc along the top edge for a neat finished rim.
- Bottom: along the bottom edge work 3 rounds of sc, decreasing evenly, to form a narrower opening for dispensing.
- Optional elastic: thread thin elastic cord through the last bottom round, leaving enough room to pull out one bag comfortably.
Step 4: Wooden ring
Join ivory at the upper back edge. Ch 10-14 and pass the chain through the wooden ring. Stitch the end of the chain back to the holder firmly, go over the attachment a second time and weave in the ends.
Step 5: Roses and leaves (pink holder)
- Rose: with blush, ch 21. Work 2 dc in the 3rd chain from the hook and 3 dc in each remaining chain. Roll the ruffled strip into a rose and stitch underneath to hold it.
- Make 3: one in blush, one in dusty pink and one in ivory.
- Leaf: ch 7, then work sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc along the chain and mirror the sequence on the other side.
- Place: sew the roses and leaves near the top of the pink holder.

Step 6: Daisies (green holder)
- Center: with yellow, make a magic ring and work 10 sc. Join.
- Petals: attach ivory. *Ch 3, 2 dc in the next stitch, ch 3, sl st in the next stitch.* Repeat around for 5 petals.
- Make about 5 daisies and sew them onto the green holder in two small clusters.
Step 7: Finish and test
Weave in all loose ends. Check that folded grocery bags slide in through the top smoothly, then pull one out through the bottom and adjust the elastic if you used it.

Care
Wash cold on a gentle cycle and lay flat to dry, out of direct sunlight. Spot-clean small marks with a damp cloth and mild detergent.
Make it yours
- Color-block the mesh
- Bobble or scalloped borders
- Butterflies, hearts or stars instead of flowers
- A tiny stitched name tag
Make it a quick Christmas gift
Crochet bag holders are some of the most useful quick crochet Christmas gifts: cheap to make from cotton you already own, finished in an evening or two, and actually used every day. They make a great crochet housewarming gift too, and sell well at Christmas craft markets. Tuck a few folded bags inside before you wrap it so it is ready to hang.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my mesh twisting?
A slight spiral is normal in joined mesh rounds. Always start each round in the first ch-1 space and count your 32 spaces; if the count stays correct, blocking will straighten it.
Can I use acrylic yarn?
You can, but cotton keeps its shape better under the weight of the bags and is easier to wash.
How do you put plastic bags in a bag holder?
Fold or loosely roll each bag, push it in through the top opening and keep adding bags on top. Pull the first one out through the bottom opening: as you take one, the next drops down, so they come out one at a time.
