Crochet Grocery Bag Holder Free Patterns: Sunflower, Daisy & Mesh
Three free crochet grocery bag holder patterns from one sturdy base: a ribbed sunflower holder, a sage daisy cascade and a cream diamond mesh with a rose flower.
Here are three crochet grocery bag holder free patterns in one garden trio. All three start from the same sturdy base with a built-in dispensing slot, then each gets its own body and decoration: a ribbed butter yellow holder with a big crochet sunflower, a sage green holder with a cascade of crochet daisies, and a cream diamond mesh with a dusty rose flower.
The free pattern for all three is below. The printable PDF is linked on this page.

Gauge
About 14 dc x 8 rows = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 in). Change the height with the starting chain or the number of rounds, in multiples of 4 or 6. If your swatch is tight, go up a hook size.
Step 1: Base and dispensing opening (every holder)
Start each of the three holders with this base, in that holder's color.
- Base ring: ch 49 and join with a sl st to form a ring of 48 chains, without twisting.
- Round 1: Ch 1, work 48 sc around and join. [48 sc]
- Rounds 2-5: Sc in each stitch around for 4 more rounds, joining each round. [48 sc]
- Round 6 (opening): Sc 16, ch 16, skip the next 16 sts, sc 16. Join. The work starts to cup.
- Round 7: Sc 16, work 16 sc into the chain space, sc 16. Join. [48 sc]
Holder 1: Ribbed sunflower
- Body: in butter yellow, work hdc rounds, alternating front-loop and back-loop stitches for a soft ribbed texture, until the body measures about 33 cm (13 in). Finish with 3 rounds of sc.
- Sunflower center: with chocolate brown, magic ring and 10 sc [10]. Round 2: 2 sc in every stitch [20]. Round 3: *1 sc, 2 sc in the next st.* Repeat around [30].
- Petals: join golden yellow and make about 12 evenly spaced petals with chains and dc/tr groups anchored around the center (for example: ch 3, 2 dc, tr, 2 dc, ch 3, sl st in the next stitches, repeated around).
- Leaves: with sage green, make 2 small leaves: a chain with graduated sc, hdc and dc along it.
- Attach: sew the sunflower and leaves to the front.

Holder 2: Daisy cascade
- Body: in sage green, work hdc rounds until the body measures about 33-36 cm (13-14 in). Finish with 3 rounds of sc.
- Daisy center: with golden yellow, magic ring and 10 sc; join.
- Petals: change to ivory and work 5 evenly spaced petals using ch-2 arches and dc clusters.
- Make 7-9 daisies to suit your holder, plus small green leaves (a ch-7 base with graduated stitches).
- Attach: arrange the daisies in a flowing vertical cascade on the front and sew each flower and leaf securely.
Holder 3: Cream diamond mesh
- Lower section: in cream, work the solid lower section until it is about 7.5 cm (3 in) high.
- Mesh: begin the open mesh by alternating dc stitches and chain spaces.
- Diamonds: offset the stitch placement on alternate rounds to create a diamond-style mesh. Continue to your preferred height.
- Top: work 3-4 rounds of sc around the upper edge.
- Scallops: add a scalloped trim of 5-dc groups separated by sl sts.
- Flower: with dusty rose, make a simple five-petal flower and sew it near the upper front.
Step 2: Straps and finishing (all holders)
- Mark two opposite points on the top edge. Join matching body-color yarn at the first marker.
- Ch about 45-55 and sl st to the opposite marker.
- Work sc back along the chain and add extra stitches at both ends.
- Weave in all yarn tails, check the lower opening and reinforce any loose edges.
- Load folded bags through the top and pull one through the bottom.

Care
Wash in cold water on a gentle cycle, or by hand with a mild detergent. Press the water out gently, lay flat to dry and reshape while damp.
Make it yours
- Striped bodies from stash yarn
- Shell-stitch tops
- Tassels on the bottom
- Little sewn-in hang tags
Make it a quick Christmas gift
Crochet bag holders are some of the most useful quick crochet Christmas gifts: cheap to make from cotton you already own, finished in an evening or two, and actually used every day. They make a great crochet housewarming gift too, and sell well at Christmas craft markets. Tuck a few folded bags inside before you wrap it so it is ready to hang.
Frequently asked questions
Which holder should I make first?
Start with the daisy holder. Its body is plain hdc, so you can focus on the base and the small daisies before trying the ribbed or mesh versions.
Where do the bags come out?
Through the 16-stitch slot made in Round 6 of the base. It sits at the bottom of the holder, so bags drop down to it as you use them.
How do you put plastic bags in a bag holder?
Fold or loosely roll each bag, push it in through the top opening and keep adding bags on top. Pull the first one out through the bottom opening: as you take one, the next drops down, so they come out one at a time.
